In the last article we told you about the first point of preparing images for publication on the site – resizing images. The second point of image preparation is image compression.
Images taken with digital cameras or modern cell phones are usually quite heavy – megabytes. Even after the size of the image has been reduced, its weight can most often have an opportunity for optimization. What does optimizing (compressing) an image do? Less weight, first of all, allows the image to load faster. In addition, a compressed image takes up less space on the server. Imagine, for example, an online store with thousands of products for each of which there are several images – can you imagine how much space on the server they will take up?
There is one more aspect that should be mentioned – as not optimized images increase the loading time of the site pages, it is badly reflected in the behavior of visitors who can go without waiting until the image in a few megabytes to load on their device, and search engines do not like compressed images.
In the last article we looked at the online service IM2GO, which allows you to perform a number of operations on images. It has a function of image compression, this function does not give a very good result. So we will look at two servvts that give maximum compression with good image quality.
This online service has several functions, but we will consider only the necessary – Reducing the size of JPG and PNG images.
To compress JPG format images, you need to upload an image on the corresponding tab by clicking the “Upload” button or drag the image file with a mouse. Uploading several images at once is supported.
As soon as the images are uploaded to the server, their compression will start automatically. The whole process is observed on the screen. When the compression is finished, you will be offered to upload the image by clicking the “Upload” button on the image icon. If several images have been uploaded, you can say them all at once by clicking on the “Upload all” button. The images will be packed into a ZIP archive.
PNG images are compressed in the same way – you only need to switch to the corresponding tab. However, as practical experience has shown, it is better to compress images of this format using another service.
This online service allows you to compress both PNG and JPG images. However, in the compression of JPG images, it loses to the above service. But in the compression of pNG images, on the contrary, it shows the best results.
Here, too, everything is as simple as possible – upload an image by pressing
